The Konopiste castle was founded as a gothic fortress after french castles in the end of the 13th century probably by Tobias of Benesov.
The first touch to a medieval structure of the castle was made in the 15th century by Jiri (George) of Sternberk and than in the 17th century by Hodejovsky family.
To a baroque residence it was made in 18th century by Vrtbas. The archduke
Fratisek (Francis) Ferdinand d'Este, who bought it in 1887 from Lobkowitzs, rebuild the castle to magnificent seat of successor.
